2nd Grade Updates with Ms. O'Malley

Second Grade has had an amazing start to the school year! Second Grade is in the middle of their Farmer's Market Storyline. Storyline is a teaching method that connects multiple subject areas and includes problem-solving, critical thinking, role-play, and hands-on activities. Students have created a Farmer's Market character and a booth where they work. Second graders have written narratives from their worker's point of view. We started the unit by attending a real-life farmers market with the 5th grade! Groups went around Shemanski Park's Farmers Market with questions for the merchants. As a class, we looked at the answers we got from the interviews and added things to improve our Farmers Market. Second Grade has also been to Columbia Farms and Sauvie Island Center this year. Thank you to the volunteers who make it possible for our students to have experiences outside of the classroom.

5th Grade Updates with Mrs. Schwartz

Fifth Grade Zoo Opening!

Earlier in October, the fifth graders traveled to the Oregon Zoo to observe and take note of how they have organized their facilities, which animals were included in each biome, how they fed and cared for animals, and so much more! This is to pair with our food webs unit of study where students have been learning about keystone species, the energy pyramid, and the different biomes that make up Earth. They are using the information learned in class and from our field trip to build a model of their assigned biome with their partners in order to open our very own zoo!

For their final, they will work with their teammates to build a model of their ecosystem. Then, each student will be responsible for researching one of the organisms within their biome’s food web. They will divide into researching organisms from the four levels of the energy pyramid: a producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, and tertiary consumer.

On Tuesday, November 19, we will invite classes and families to come and “visit” our zoo, RRR: Restore. Rehabilitate. Release! More information to come, but we will host an open house from 2:00-3:00 on the 19th. Come and celebrate all the research and development completed by our students!

Middle School Updates with Ms. Ferris & Ms. Allquist

Ms. Ferris: In 8th grade we are studying the Holocaust. Students are reading their Holocaust novels in book groups and we had our first discussion last Friday. I was really impressed with their discussions! As a group they summarized, made predictions, and analyzed what they had read so far in light of what we have been learning about the Holocaust. We will finish up our novels in early November and students have already started working on their final projects: an independent research project on the Holocaust-related topic of their choice.

Because I am only teaching in the afternoons this year, I only see 8th graders right now. The schedule will switch at the trimester, and then I will be working with 6th graders. Can't wait--they seem like a great bunch!

Ms. Allquist: 6yh grade mathematicians have been hard at work building ratio tables, making comparisons, and investigating unit rates! The photos posted are from an activity game called “Seeing the  Best Deal?” Groups worked hard to figure out the best deal on items from a store, prove their answers with graphs and pictures, then got to take turns playing host to “What’s the Best Deal?” Before your next shopping trip, ask if they can help you find the best bulk deal on your items!

7th grade language arts is wrapping up their until on the Power and Poetics of Storytelling.  They got their choice of a final project: a poetry portfolio, or using the vocabulary from our unit to try to sell houses on Zillow! The project is due Monday, but they have been working hard during class and are blowing me away with their quality in work! Next week we will start talking about Cookbooks! Feel free to look through some favorites at home and let them bring one in to share next week!

SIS Annual Book Fair: November 1st-7th

We are happy to announce the much-anticipated Book Fair is here! We will open on Friday at which time students can purchase or just preview the offerings and make their wish lists to bring home for parents to review. Students may shop during recess and their designated library time as well as from 3-3:30 after school with their families. This is our biggest library fundraiser of the year with up to 50% of sales coming back to us to use for new library materials.

Don't want to send the kids with cash? Click here to learn about setting up an eWallet! You determine the budget and students don't need to worry about losing money.

Did we sell out of an item your child wanted? You can shop online all week with the money still applying to our fundraising goals. All orders over $25 ship for free.

Thanks for your support!

If you are interested in helping set up/clean up, running a fun activity booth or all of the above, please sign up here .

Teachers Professional Development Day November 8th! The staff will be hard at work at the school November 8th for Teacher Grading Day. While the students have a day off this day, we want to show some staff appreciation by offering meals/snacks throughout the day. Please see the sign up with the specifics if you are able to support in any way.

A reminder that all volunteers need to have a clear/up to date background check on file with the school office.  Please reach out if you are unsure if yours is up to date and we can verify for you.  These need to be renewed every two years.  As always, feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns at volunteers@sauvieislandschool.org.
